For most of us, we are probably only familiar with two types of paper – cardstock and copier paper. Even then, we may be unaware of the different paper weights, the coating on the paper, and maybe even the different paper types.

Without having spent time interacting with them before, choosing the best paper type for your print job can be tricky, especially if you are working with a tight turnaround time.

To help you answer your questions, we have compiled an easy and quick guide to the different options and what they are most suitable for.

    Best Paper Type Weight

Paper weight generally refers to four things – how sturdy the paper is, how thick it is, how heavy it is, and also how dense it is. There are many reasons why this is important. Paper weight will affect the light permeability of your product, the cost, as well as the cost of shipping if you plan to mail the print job out to your clients. More importantly, the higher the paper weight, the sturdier it will be, and chances are that it will be more durable as well.

Paper weight is generally measured in three ways. First, pounds (lb. or #) highlights the weight of a whole uncut piece, otherwise known as a ream of paper. Next, point (pt.) denotes the thickness of an individual sheet. For example, a 10 pt. paper will be 0.010 inches in thickness. Last, density (gsm) refers to how many grams per square meter the paper will weigh.

    Best Paper Type

There are many different types of paper; each will have its own benefits when it comes to different print jobs. However, different paper types are also generally an easy way for people to categorize common paper weights and thickness to gauge the best paper type without going into the nitty-gritty measurements. The five common types of paper are board paper, cover stock, text paper, kraft paper, and bond paper.

    Coatings on Best Paper Type

Last, whatever paper type you decide on can come coated or uncoated. Coated paper is treated with a special sealant that prevents ink from spreading and can help images appear sharper. However, it can be hard to write on. Uncoated paper, on the other hand, has a larger variety of finishes and is often used for stationary and books.
