    Client Spotlights, Booklets, Magazines

Let’s check out this zine printing project. Wide Angle Youth Media is coming up on two decades of working with Baltimore youth to give them a voice in the community and the resources to express themselves.

They target traditionally underserved demographic groups and neighborhoods and provide free, accessible youth development programming that helps to instill confidence and promote creativity in young people. One of their many projects is “The Skin We’re In,” a creative zine printing project.

WAYM’s Baltimore Speaks Out program worked in conjunction with the Enoch Pratt Free Library to create the zine “The Skin We’re In.” It focuses on African American culture, from dance and artwork to fashion through the ages.

The zine doesn’t solely focus on art, though – Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in outer space, was featured prominently, as well as a thoughtful analysis of how news consumption has changed since the rise of smartphones. Each section was written by youth ranging from fifth to tenth grade who participate in the program.

Client Review of Zine Printing Project

Why did you select Dazzle Printing?

We looked at several different printers, and chose Dazzle Printing after seeing a zine printed for a friend called TortillaGurl. It was well done and the printing was vibrant and clear. We are a nonprofit youth media organization, so we have to be both budget-conscious and focused on quality when looking at different options. When it was time to print our project, Dazzle provided the most cost efficient quote that also provided us with a high quality final project.

How was your experience with Dazzle Printing?

Working with Dazzle was easy, and felt like a relief, since we planned to work on a very tight deadline. Dazzle responded quickly and had a sample package delivered within days. We ended up extending our timeline; however, the shipment was still received in a timely manner.

How do you feel about the quality and timeliness of your project?

We are pleased with the results of our zine. The ink and binding of each book is well done.

Would you use Dazzle Printing again? Why?

Yes, we would use Dazzle again! Dazzle printed a great product for almost half the price of other places. We would recommend Dazzle for their timeliness, quality, and professionalism.

Is there anything you wish had been different?

After receiving the zine, we realized we should have chosen a less thick outside cover or no gloss to feel more magazine-like. Because of the lamination, the outer edge of the cover pages rise and curl and we would rather avoid that.
