About Wire-o Printing

One of the four binding styles offered by Dazzle Printing is wire-o printing. Often used to bind workbooks, planners, and journals, wire-o printing looks more sophisticated than plastic coil binding. As the name implies, wire-o binding, also called double loop binding, uses wire.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Wire-o Printing

Advantages of Wire-o Printing

  • Since wire-o bound books lay flat when opened, these books are easy to follow instructions or write it.
  • Pages can be turned completely around to show just one page instead of two pages at one time.

Disadvantages of wire-o binding include

  • Unlike plastic coils, wire-o will get misshapen if pulled, crushed, or stretched.
  • Due to the wire edges, they are considered less safe for children than plastic coil binding.
  • Wire-o binding is more expensive than saddle stitch and perfect bound binding, but it is cheaper than plastic coil binding.
  • Large margins need to be left on the bound edge of the book so that text is not punched.

How Are Books Wire-o Bound?

  • 01 For wire-o binding, we print the book on large sheets of paper on our digital presses. We print between 2 and 4 books on each sheet of paper, depending on the finished size of the book. We print the inside pages and covers together in full sets when the covers are not going to be laminated. We print the inside pages and covers separately when the covers will be laminated.
  • 02 We then cut the inside pages and covers down to the finished size of the books. When covers are laminated, they must be collated with the covers.
  • 03The bound edge of the book is then punched on our automatic punch with square holes. The thickness of the book will determine the size of the wire that will be used. The entire book is put on an open wire, which is then shut closed.
  • 04 When applying the wire, the back cover is placed on top of the front cover. After the wire is attached, the back cover is turned to the back of the book, so that the portion of the wire that has been closed sits between the inside back cover and the last inside page of the book.
